"Diggs-Latham Goes Cross Country"

Dance/Drama Concert

The Spring Dance/Drama Concert was an original production by our dance teacher, Amanda Stevenson, entitled "Diggs-Latham Goes Cross Country." Third graders were the dancers, and select students in grades 4th and 5th served as the speakers, who were a group of people stranded in an airport lobby. These travelers were from San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle, New York and Honolulu, and they all showed stereotypical characteristics of the culture of each city. Ms. Stevenson choreographed a dance, representative of each city.

Studing Batiks and Stained Glass Windows

Third Grade students are finishing a unit in which they are studying traditional techniques of making stained glass windows and batiks. They used Elmer's White Glue to create outlines in their design and created interesting color schemes with chalk pastels.

A stained glass window is of course made from glass and held together by melting metal between each shape and pane of glass. A batik is a composition created on cloth. The artist dyes the cloth to add color and covers areas with wax between each color. Many batiks have white outlines between major shapes in the composition, created from outlining the shapes with wax and then removing the wax at the end of the process.

More 3rd Grade Paper Sculptures

Check out the fun we are having learning about two-dimensional versus three-dimensional art and using tempera paint and markers as we use art elements in our compositions!

3rd Grade Paper Sculptures

Students used tempera paint and created non-objective designs with a variety of colors, lines, and shapes. They also added another non-objective design on the back of their painting by using markers. They moved from 2-D, two-dimensional art, to 3-D, three-dimensional art, by cutting, folding, and attaching pieces of the paper to create an abstract sculpture.
